Long hair.
Many people have never heard of any scriptures that talk about
the issue of hair. When a lady refers to 1 Corinthians 11 as a reason that they choose not to cut their hair, it
is often argued that there is no such custom, yada, yada, yada!
Please forgive my sarcasm---it's
just amusing to read an entire chapter in the Bible that talks about the distinctions between men and women's hair, but then
to say that if any man is contentious, there is no such custom.
KJV says:
14Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is
a shame unto him?
15But
if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
16But if any man seem to be contentious, we
have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
I am not here to
criticize or argue a Biblical point, but let me just say this:
There is no such custom as being
contentious. The Bible time and time again teaches to live peaceably with all men when possible. The Amplified
Bible says it this way:
14Does not the native
sense of propriety (experience, common sense, reason) itself teach you that for a man to wear long hair is a dishonor [humiliating
and degrading] to him,
15But
if a woman has long hair, it is her ornament and glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
16Now if anyone is disposed to be argumentative
and contentious about this, we hold to and recognize no other custom [in worship] than this, nor do the churches of God generally.
Fortunately, I have not had a lot of negative comments left in my guest book (on my website) on
the issue of hair (from our videos), but I cannot tell you how many times I've read comments to those who do not cut their
hair-comments that are completely argumentative, insulting, and sometimes downright nasty.
Many
of my website videos of hair how-to's are done by my daughter. The girl was born with very coarse hair, and it's often
obvious in her tutorials. The hairstyles that are most popular today are roll curls, which do not require using a curling
iron very often. We have received many comments about how fried her hair is, how damaged it is, how she desperately
needs a trim, and so on. Fortunately, other comments will come along from other young ladies who have the same hair
type as she does. My daughter's hair is not fried, overly processed or excessively damaged just because she doesn't
trim it. Please keep in mind all of the products on the market today for frizzy hair. Some people are just born
with it, and hair care companies have caught on to this knowledge! That is also why there are perms for relaxing people's
hair-and it isn't just for one particular race of people.
Could it be that everyone's hackles
raise because they feel a tug in their own heart to stop cutting their hair, but don't want to heed to what their heart is
saying? Could it be some sort of jealousy? I mean, with how rude and insulting some people's "knowledge"
of 1 Corinthians 11 is spewed towards those with uncut hair, it really leaves me to wonder, and finds me a bit amused at how
much of a hot button the topic becomes, especially because Paul is speaking against the very attitude that
is being displayed--contention.
Whatever the reason, it doesn't really matter to those
of us who are happy to have long, uncut hair. We are not standing around judging every woman who has cut hair-our own
attitudes would not be right if we were. Much more could be said about this particular topic, but I don't feel it necessary
to say more here.
All of that being said, it really saddens me to hear people refer to
long hair as boring. Seeing one woman that does nothing with her hair, leaving it parted in the middle, straggly and
stringy, seems to label all long hair as boring. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about! But...
Oh, not so!!! Long hair is actually in style right now (so why all the negative comments if hair is long and
uncut? sigh...), and there are SO many beautiful dos out there!
